Disappointed by the low page rate, Cooke left comics to work in Canada as a magazine art director, and graphic and product designer for the next 15 years. Inspired by the story to pursue comics, Cooke did brief work for DC in the late 1980s, including a five-page crime story in New Talent Showcase #19, which was actually edited by "Night of the Stalker" artist Sal Amendola. Fortunately, editor Archie Goodwin cut all that out. The idea was that the Batman would not say a word throughout, so of course I soon decided he needed to say a few words. Sal drew it up and asked me to dialogue it. "Night of the Stalker" began as an idea by Batman artist extraordinaire Neal Adams, who talked it over with young artist Sal Amendola and Sal's brother Vin. If I had only been involved with this one Batman story, I'd probably still have some recognition for the character. A whole world waits to see what we shall do. Can we carry through in an age where we will witness not only new breakthroughs in weapons of destruction, but also a race for mastery of the sky and the rain, the ocean and the tides, the far side of space, and the inside of men's minds? All mankind waits upon out decision. My call is to the young in heart, regardless of age. I'm asking each of you to be pioneers towards that New Frontier. Unconquered pockets of ignorance and prejudice. Beyond that frontier are uncharted areas of science. The frontier of unknown opportunities and perils. And we stand today on the edge of a new frontier. That there is no longer an American frontier. That all the horizons have been explored.
Some would say that those struggles are all over.
They were determined to make the new world strong and free - an example to the world. The pioneers gave up their safety, their comfort, and sometimes their lives to build our new west.
